The Sun is up... something we don't say often in Montana! Y'all know we are pretty ok with limited, smart sun exposure as the Sun brings life to so many things. We only make SUNUP® during our summer months, so grab a tube while it’s in stock.

SUNUP®-- the clean screen -- is light, non-greasy, fragrance free, un-tinted SPF cream packed with organic coconut, cacao, jojoba, vanilla and aloe vera. Olive squalane, hyaluronic acid and green tea give a moisture boost. It is naturally preserved without petro-derived preservatives (ethylhexylglycerin / phenoxyethanol) and doesn't contain toxic sunscreen agents (oxybenzone / octinoxate / octocrylene / homosalate / butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane) so you sensitive peeps and babies can use it too.

A lot of factors go into how much solar radiation you are getting and that determines how much SPF you may need. Where you live, the time of day (sun angle), season (earth tilt), altitude, geographic location, substrate, etc...etc...they all matter so be smart about it.  The absolute best way to protect your skin from the sun is to cover up with loose clothing, wear big brims and seek shade.  But, humans like to try and defy nature so they over-frolic-about unprotected in sunny environments. SUNUP® will assist if you try to defy nature and forgot your clothes or hats. To be honest, we never used to wear sunscreen because OMG IT FEELS SO GROSS ON MY FACE. But, in our relentless pursuit to feel nothing, we created a sunscreen that one will actually wear daily. 

Furthermore, we utilize a green synthesis regenerative emulsifier (the stuff that keeps water and oil together) from olive feedstocks. Absolutely zero palm in here. Green synthesis means that it is made without solvents and is ethylene oxide-free, petroleum free, biodegradable and ECOCERT approved. It is 100% vegetable origin and importantly (to us) palm free. Yep, our ingredients cost about 10x’s more than the commonly used palm and petro derived stuff of which an entire cosmetic industry relies upon but you have to start somewhere if you want to make change; you won’t find SUNUP® on a box store shelf.

SUNUP® protects your skin with the mineral zinc oxide. We use a non-nano, uncoated zinc oxide. Although at first, you might see a titch of white cast as you apply, fret not as it will quickly be transparent. SUNUP® works on all skin tones.

Higher SPF is not always a better SPF.

SPF means Sun Protection Factor and the corresponding number is how “robust” that factor is. Studies show you should wear at least an SPF 20-30 applied regularly. If you are forcing yourself to slog on a heavy, sticky, thick, greasy, stinky SPF 50+ cream, you are less likely to use it. Studies show daily consistent use is your best defense in preventing long term skin damage from the sun. We feel it’s better to keep the SPF sensical so you actually wear it daily.

Our SPF has been tested on humans and at 20.1% zinc inclusion, we received a confirmed SPF 27 factor. 

The majority of SPF creams available will claim SPFs from 15-50 with 20% zinc. Almost all SPF’s are tested on metal plates and not humans. This is why you will see such a variance in claimed SPF values with the same zinc %. We call bu*lsh*t. The only way to really know is to test on humans. We tested on humans according the FDA Final Rule 21 C.F.R. § 201.327, section VI. Some humans tested at SPF 32, some at SPF 25. All skin is beautifully unique. The average amongst everyone tested will give you are much more accurate SPF.

Reef Safe?: In our research from widely published studies...any SPF, chemical or mineral (zinc/titanium), is not great for the ocean's reefs or any aquatic life. Many will claim their zinc or titanium mineral SPF's are "reef safe." Again, bu*lsh*t. You must consider the saturation of zinc oxide in a water source and what species (not many) have been tested with zinc oxide concentrations placed in their aquatic home. Zinc oxide is in fact, very toxic to certain species of aquatic creatures and huge warning stickers come on all zinc products to alert manufacturers to this. Please think twice before entering any body of water with massive amounts of SPF on your skin; it will inherently wash off to some degree. What if a million+ people went in the same body of water wearing SPF cream? Chemical soup. Nope.

Waterproof?: No, our SPF cream is not waterproof. To be a waterproof cosmetic, you must include silicones and other water proofing substances. We feel these ingredients are not good for skin. Cover up!
